Taupo-based fertiliser company UPTAKE has been helping farmers for more than 40 years. Their unique approach to fertilisation has seen them win friends and influence customers in all types of farming fields, from beef, sheep dairy, goats and deer to horticulture to equine. Peter Bell is a farm owner in Ruakaka, just north of Whangarei in Northland. He offers an agistment service for horse owners looking to spell their horses between races. Pete has been using UPTAKE fertiliser on his land for six years and says it’s been going very well.
“All the horses come in for agistment, a spell in from the track,” says Mr Bell. “The main interest that the trainers have is that they put on a certain amount of weight while they’re here, which they do very nicely on our farm, using UPTAKE’s liquid fertilizer.
“The horses can be here for anything from six weeks to three months before they go back into work. We’ve found that they do very well and have had no health problems while they’re here.” Some of New Zealand’s top racehorse owners have sent their horses to Pete Bell’s farm to be agisted, such is his reputation for successful weight gain and maintenance of health. “The horses are weighed before they come here and weighed again when they go back,” says Mr Bell. “Often they’ve gained 45 to 50 kilos after six weeks. That’s a big gain.”
Founder and CEO of Uptake, John Davis, says racehorse agistment is a big business in New Zealand, particularly through the Waikato.
UPTAKE is 100 percent New Zealand owned & operated and is the industry leader in environmentally friendly fertiliser production and use.
“The proof that UPTAKE’s system is working is shown in the results our valued customers, like Peter Bell, are seeing,” says John Davis. “If the customer is happy and their stock is healthy, then we’re happy.”
